Backyard, May 2, 2018

I don’t usually report on backyard sightings. This was too good though – a Kentucky Warbler was in our backyard for a nice, long visit. This sighting is a first for me and my wife. In the yard at the same time was an Ovenbird and several White-throated Sparrows along with the much more common House Sparrows and Starlings.

Update! The Kentucky is still hanging out about an hour later. Also saw a Common Yellowthroat at that time as well as the Northern Waterthrush and Ovenbird.

A bit warmer today – nearly 80 degrees in the morning. Overcast. Not as much warbler variety today as yesterday. We did get a close fly by from a young Red-tailed Hawk. It was being harassed by Red-winged Blackbirds. It flew over the field into the large tree near the main harbor-side entrance. There it tore off a few bites of whatever it caught and then it was chased out and back over the field and over our heads. It came within 10 feet of us or so.

Beautiful weather today – low 70s F, light breezes, clear skies. Got out early, for us, for a change. It had been cool to cold recently. Posts of warbler sightings recently on IBET got us interested in seeing what was at the hedge. It was a fantastic morning!
